1. Breathe. It is going to be okay. This war won’t last forever. I swear to you, there will come a day when this war zone of a body feels like home again.

2. There will be days when you feel like nothing but a stuttering apology. Oh, but darling, just know that the hate that lies beneath your own skin was created to keep the light from getting in. You are so much more than the quivering breath between sobs. Dear, you must stop apologize for taking up space, there are millions of tiny miracles that hinge on your existence alone that have yet to take place.

3. Baby, you gotta love yourself. There will be days when you are alone and your life will depend on your ability to believe that you are worth it. Damn, you are so worth it. Baby I’ve never met someone that could make the heart smile quite like you.

4. Fall in love with strangers. Find yourself gazing a moment too long into the blue-green eyes of the boy sitting next to you on the subway. Notice how he smiles at the tattered book that he holds in his hands. Become jealous of whatever it is that could produce a smile so rare. And darling, when the car clatters to a stop and he collects his belongings, watch as he leaves without even a whisper. Do not cry my dear. This will not be the last time you learn to let love go.

5. Do not let his name be the last one to touch your tongue. He is not the end of you, nor was he ever the beginning. Darling I know that his hands were your favorite but don’t allow him to wrap them around your throat. You have survived too much heartache to let him be your last. He doesn’t deserve to be the end of a story as beautiful as you.

6. Cry when the world is collapsing. You don’t always have to be brave.

7. You are not foolish for loving so hard. Love is the answer to a question you didn’t even know you were asking. Love with all of yourself. Give him everything you have to give but know that you can survive if he gives it all away. Take it back in both hands and call it yours again. A regifted heart may be a heavy burden, but broken heart is an unimaginable weight. Don’t let him break your heart my dear, merely let him return it. Trust me, I’ve had a few broken hearts to my name.
